Grid penalties: Kovalainen - 10 slot grid penalty for pre-qualifying engine change drops him to the back
Race notes: Albers starts from pits. Button stalls on the grid and is pushed to the pitlane and retired.

But at the front - disaster for Alonso, he goes for broke, runs wide, nearly takes his teammate out and loses a place to Heidfeld. He now has a lot of ground to make up while Hamilton streaks away, taking a second a lap out of the field. Webber makes an over-ambitious passing attempt on Kubica at Turn 1 losing several places - his hard work in qualifying coming to nothing. He sets about making his way back through the field - he's a long way to go!

Wurz clips Speed, launching the Toro Rosso driver into the air and retirement with a destroyed left front suspension. Wurz has a damaged rear wing but the team reckon the damage is not serious enough to retire him. Alonso is on the ragged edge in third, running wide again at Turn 1. A few laps later, he does it yet again and loses third place to Massa. Did he damage the underneath of the car the first time he ran across the grass?

Heidfeld is the first to pit, confirming the suspicion that his third place on the grid was achieved while very light on fuel. Hamilton is next to pit, with a 21 second lead over Alonso at the time of his stop - comes out ahead of Raikkonen in 5th. However, there are double yellow waved flags for a car in the wall at Turn 4 (Sutil) - the safety car is out. That's bad news for Hamilton - he's stopped under race conditions and others will have the chance to do so under the Safety Car, depending on how quickly they close the pitlane. Alonso pits, as does Rosberg. Were they committed to the stop and will have to take a penalty, or did they beat the pitlane closure?

Safety Car still out but pitlane re-opened. Massa, yet to pit, is leading, with Hamilton in 2nd. With the Safety Car back in the pitlane and racing resumed, Hamilton retains the lead but only yards ahead of Heidfeld in 2nd. His hard work at the start paid off, but he has to do it all again now. Alonso and Rosberg are under investigation, presumably because of the pitlane issue.

Massive accident for Kubica in the braking zone for the hairpin sees the Safety Car immediately re-deployed. Contact with a toyota initiated the accident which was the worst I've seen for a while in F1. Medical teams are at the scene. Alonso and Rosberg both given 10 second stop-go penalties. Kubica is out of the car and transferred to the medical centre. Safety Car comes in and racing is underway again.

News from the medical centre: Kubica is "stable" but nothing further at this stage.

Alonso serves his penalty and ends up back in 15th - not a good afternoon for him. Rosberg and Trulli have a synchronised spin in Turn 1, making no contact with each other but certainly disrupting their forward progress! Rosberg has trouble getting underway again, but eventually gets into gear and away.

Coulthard drives into the garage and retires. Massa and Fisichalla are under investigation although it's not clear at the moment what for! Possibly leaving the pitlane when the red light was showing during the first Safety Car period.

Latest from the medical centre: Kubica is conscious and spokesman says "everything is going to be OK". Kubica has been transferred to hospital in Montreal for further checks.

Fastest lap from Alonso as he wakes up to the fact that his championship lead is going to take a serious bashing this afternoon. Albers goes flying across the grass and back onto the circuit, spreading debris right across the track. Alonso has another leary moment across the curbs - not his usual smooth self this afternoon. Safety Car out again. Hamilton again has pitted before the Safety Car period but retains his lead as others pit when the lane re-opens. Alonso has indeed damaged his underside which explains his somewhat careless driving! But he's back in the points with slower cars ahead.

Both Massa and Fisichella have been black-flagged for exiting the pits under a red light. Stewards are taking a tough line - as they should. Yellow flags waving again as Liuzzi hits the Champions' Wall, retiring from 7th. And yet again, the Safety Car is out - much as I love this circuit, it's canyon like walls mean that any accident almost inevitably leads to a safety car period as the car is recovered. It doesn't lend itself to a good afternoon's racing.

Trulli has an embarrassing end to his race as he crashes into the wall under the Safety Car. The race is back on with 10 laps to go. Hamilton just has to hold his nerve now. Sato passes Schumacher in the closing laps to take 7th place and is closing fast on Alonso in 6th. Alonso is on the harder and slower tyres and is driving with damage from his earlier off-track excursions. Sato has a run down the outside of the straight and takes the place from Alonso who can't afford to defend too strongly for fear of losing even more points to Hamilton.

Medical update: Kubica has suffered a broken leg, but is awake and talking and otherwise well.
